War of Spanish Succession Map
Fine original color example of Mortier's 4-sheet map of the Theater of War in Austria, Bavaria and Alpine Tirolian regions.
The map illustrates a part of the 'War of the Spanish Succession', depicting the French push towards Vienna. Just after this map was produced Prince Eugene of Savoy and John Churchill combined to defeat the French at the Battle of Blenheim, 1704.
The map is in striking full wash color, with a finely colored decorative title cartouche. Centered on Munich and Prague, the map is in exceptional color.
Pierre, or Pieter, Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch engraver, son of a French refugee. He was born in Leiden. In 1690 he was granted a privilege to publish French maps in Dutch lands. In 1693 he released the first and accompanying volume of the Neptune Francois. The third followed in 1700. His son, Cornelis (1699-1783), would partner with Johannes Covens I, creating one of the most important map publishing companies of the eighteenth century.
