Description

A Dane Eyes the East Coast of Britain.

First edition of this very rare Danish atlas of the North Sea.

Paul de Löwenörn (1751-1826) was a Danish mariner, later Adjutant-General, Captain-Lieutenant, and Director of the Royal Danish Marine Archives, who published a series of navigation guides and charts.
This slim volume contains charts depicting the islands and river mouths of the North Sea, mostly the coasts of England and Scotland.

This slim volume contains charts depicting the islands and river mouths of the North Sea. Like his Viking raider ancestors, Löwenörn was mostly concerned with the east coasts of England and Scotland.

Rarity

As the target market for the book was the small number of Danish sea captains stopping in the British Isles, the number of copies printed must have been small. The number extant is smaller still, with no copies recorded in RBH since 1962 (Sotheby's $22.40).

OCLC records examples in the Royal Danish Library, the British Library, and the National Library of Sweden.
