This is a great pictorial map of Huntington Beach, the southern California beachside city. Taken from the north, the map shows the community in bright colors, with the ocean visible on the right. Numerous advertisements dot the map, including many businesses that are still located in the neighborhood.
Huntington Beach is well-known for its surfing, though this almost entirely escapes the scope of the map. Businesses advertised cover a wide swath of industries and services, including private detectives, diners, carpet cleaners, real-estate agents, and much more. In all, this is a nice pictorial map of a great American beachside city.
The Ranlee Publishing Company ran a short-lived but very successful business based on producing maps of cities across the US, which were funded by charging advertisers several hundred dollars each for advertising space. While the company eventually grew to have branch offices in eleven cities across the nation, it would be dismantled in the late 1980s after charges of defrauding businesses who had paid for, but never received, maps.
