Description

Excellent Minnesota pictorial map focusing on the Arrowhead region - the region west of Lake Superior, including the Boundary Waters and Iron Range.

The map includes many historical notes, vignettes illustrative of landmark events, many focusing on local Indians and French Canadian trappers and traders.

As with many maps from the early-20th-century Minnesota pictorial tradition, this map was made by two women. Irene Anderson drew the decorative elements, and Kathryn Arnquist drew the "Block & Borders". The map was published by the American Association of University Women, Hibbing, Minnesota Branch. The copyright was held by Association President Mrs. C.H. Stewart.

This is one of the better pictorials from the Upper Midwest that we have encountered, and rare to boot. The map is not in Rumsey and OCLC records four (probably actually three) examples (MNHS, WHS, WHS Archives (likely a duplicate), and Cleveland Public).

Condition Description
Mounted in an early frame. Laid down and varnished. Possibly sunstruck. Overall Fair to Good condition - the mark would be Very Good to Very Good + without the varnish and mounting, as the paper and image are complete and fully legible.
