Description

Map of the Spanish Civil War Published by the American Communist Organization, the Friends of the Soviet Union.

Separate map of the Iberian Peninsula, printed in black, red, and blue, showing the state of the Spanish Civil War. The map was issued with Soviet Russia Today, a newspaper issued by the Friends of the Soviet Union in New York.

The map can be dated to roughly early 1937 (probably February 1937); Malaga has not yet been captured by the Nationalists, but the region has been encircled with the capture of Motril.

On the left of the map is a panel with portraits of four important republican and left-wing figures: Francisco Largo de Caballero, President of the Cabinet (Prime Minister); Manuel Azana, President of the Spanish Republic; Julio Alvarez del Vayo, Foreign Minister and Delegate to the League of Nations; Dolores Ibarruri, Called La Pasionaria, beloved Communist leader of the masses of Spain.

The key gives a short explanation of the origins of the Civil War (i.e., 1936 election of the Popular Front government followed by the Franco rebellion), it shows territory held by the Spanish republican government, Armed groups loyal to the government operating behind Fascist lines, and "Logical geographical division of Spain into regions, similar to the division adhered to prior to the formation of the 47 provinces existing today."

In the lower right is an inset map of Madrid, which is captioned: "The major buildings, including the Telephone building, which has been the scene of repeated bombings of the city: the Casa del Campo, University City and the Quatro Caminos, a working class district. The population of Madrid at the time of the 1933 census of 1,014,704."

This map also predates the replacement of Caballero by Juan Negrin, in May 1937, a move that was supported by the Soviet Union.
