Description

A fascinating French map of the region around Beijing, updated with additional toponyms, dates, and routes, in ink manuscript dated to the French involvement in the Boxer Rebellion.

The main route illustrated in manuscript dates from October of 1900 and runs from Hsi Kou to Pao Ting. The latter was the site of a major event in the war: the Taiyuan massacre took place on July 9, 1900. Reports at the time alleged that Yuxian, governor of Shanxi, ordered the killings of 45 Christian missionaries and village Christians, including children.

The Boxer Rebellion was a violent anti-foreign, anti-colonial, and anti-Christian uprising that took place in China between 1899 and 1901.  The Rebellion occurred at the end of the Qing Dynasty and hastened its demise. The Eight-Nation Alliance of European powers, Japan, and the United States put down the rebellion and imposed harsh penalties on the central government.  The French took an active role in the hostilities, supplying 3,000 of 51,755 total troops for the Alliance.
