Map of Poland on a Red Carnation

Fine decorative map showing Poland in the shape of a red carnation, a celebration of the International Workers Day on May 1st, which was one of the most important holidays of the Communist countries.

The tradition in Poland was to wear a red carnation on May 1, as a symbol of socialism and the labor movement, which had often been used in demonstrations on International Workers' Day (May Day).

This is an early work of a Polish (naturalized French) artist Roman Cieślewicz (1930 -1996) who was a graphic artist and photographer. Until 1946 he attended the School of Artistic Industry in Lvov. From 1947 to 1949, he attended the Krakow's Fine Arts Lycee and Kraków Academy of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1955. In 1963 he moved to France where he lived for the rest of his life. He worked as an art director for Vogue and Elle and at an advertising agency called Mafia.
