A Monumental Pictorial Map of Berkeley & The East Bay, With Original Decorative Folder
Fabulous Art Deco style map by Michael Baltekal Goodman, notable for its brilliant color and striking design.
The minimalist design of the street layout at the center of the map is in stark contrast to the blue pattern of the sea at lower left and the rich greens, reds and oranges of the inland area at upper right. The names of several of the main streets are featured in scrolls, also historical events and important places such as Oakland Municipal Airport. Many buildings are featured in elevations; meanwhile vessels, ancient and contemporary, are shown in the Bay.
Wind cherubs at the corners harken back to ancient maps as does the mythical sea creature at lower right. In the elaborate border are vignette images of historical events.
The map was produced in collaboration with Eugene (Eugen) Neuhaus, the California painter and teacher.
At the center of the upper border a quotation proclaims the glory of San Francisco in the westward push of the nation.
