Rare Ludwig Bucholtz Map of Virginia -- First State!

Superlatively hand-colored lithographed folding map of Virginia, compiled by famed Virginia mapmaker Ludwig von Bucholtz and published in 1858.

Ludwig von Bucholtz was commissioned by the Virginia State Legislature to prepare the revisions to the 1826 Hermann Boye 9-sheet map of Virginia, which was at the time the most detailed and important map of Virginia. While Von Bucholtz's work was exhaustive, the requirement that he essentially revise the existing copperplates resulted in a less than accurate product, with which he was unsatisfied. After completing his revision of the Boye map, Bucholtz created this remarkable map, which was published by Ritchie & Dunnavant in Richmond in 1858.

The lithographic stone prepared by Charles Ludwig for Von Bucholtz was utilized again by West & Johnston in 1862.

The history of this work is described by William Wooldridge in his comprehensive study of the Bucholtz map and its 3 derivates, published in the Spring 2007 edition of The Portolan. As noted by Wooldridge, the map was also used by Matthew Fontaine Maury, with additions, in connection with his work on the state of Virginia published in 1868 and also by a map commonly referred to as the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) map.

Bucholtz map is without question the most detailed and important map of Virginia published prior to the Civil War, and it is a uniquely Virginia product; one of very few antebellum state maps that was compiled, printed, and published in the South.
