Description

Rare promotional map of Colombia, promoting primarily the domestic air routes flown by Avianca, the National Airline of Colombia.

Based upon the history of Avianca noted below, we date the map to approximately 1946, as the international routes described do not yet include New York City or Europe, suggesting the map was created at about the time Avianca began expanding its service beyond the northern parts of South America.

Avianca S.A. is the national airline of Colombia. The airline was founded in December 1919, when it was initially registered under the name SCADTA. Avianca is the world's second oldest airline after KLM.

In June 1940, SCADTA merged with Colombian Air Carrier SACO (acronym of Servicio Aéreo Colombiano), forming the new Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A. or Avianca.

In 1946, Avianca began flights to Quito, Lima, Panama City, Miami, New York City and Europe, using Douglas DC-4s and C-54 Skymasters. Also, the log shown appears to correspond to the period between 1937 and 1946: http://logos.wikia.com/wiki/Avianca

This map is apparently very rare, as we locate only the example cataloged by the National Library of France.
