Description

Manuscript Map of Humboldt County, California, Drawn by Pioneer Settler Henry J. Dart.

Detailed map of part of Humboldt County, drawn by Henry J. Dart.

The map notes the Mad River Canal, constructed in 1854 to allow the fledging logging industry to float the old growth Redwoods from the Mad River to the saw mills of Humboldt Bay.

The map identified the towns of Eureka, Arcata, Hookton, Rohnerville, Hydesville, Ferndale and Shelter Cove. Rohnerville, originally named Eel River, was the location of a post office beginning in 1859, with the town's name being changed to Rohnerville in 1874.

One interesting feature of the map is the illustration of a surveyed township on the Mattole River in the southern part of the map, northeast of Shelter Cove.

Henry J. Dart would seem to have arrived in California in the 1850s. His name appears on a letter to the California legislature dated December, 1858, along with other citizens of Humboldt County, seek assistance against Indian hostilities.

The map is a unique survival, drawn by a little known Humboldt County pioneer surveyor.
