Description

Eastern Sheet (Ohio and parts of Kentucky, etc.) of W.L. Nicholson's Postal Map, published in 1885.

Beginning with David Burr in the 1830s, the tradition of the American regional postal map became a centralized service provided from Washington, D.C.

In the furtherance of this tradition, W.L. Nicholson produced high quality large format maps for all regions served by the Postal Service within the Continental United States. Focusing on post routes and the location of post offices, these maps provided a concise graphic depiction of the Postal Services routes, frequency of delivery, etc.

The present map, representing the Eastern half of this wall map provides the best possible snapshot of the operations of the Postal Service within the State of Ohio and continguous regions as of 1885.
