Description

Finely detailed "Military and Maritime" map of Spain, compbiled by Facundo Canada y Lopez, one of Spain's leading military map makers.

The map contains extraordinary detail, both within the map in the many surrounding details.

Facundo Cañada Lopez was a Spanish military and cartographer.

He joined the army with the rank of soldier in 1874 and was later promoted to lieutenant of the provincial militia. In 1880, he was captain of infantry, at which time he published his first work (this map).

In 1882, he joined the Civil Guard. In 1886, he was stationed in Madrid, with the rank of lieutenant, and later he was sent to Cuba, where he was promoted to captain. In 1897 he was in charge of the command of Santa Clara, and published the plan of the judicial district of Santa Clara (1897) Later he was promoted commander.

After the end of the Spanish-American War he remained in Cuba as a member of the contingent in charge of repatriating the Spanish forces. In 1900, he published pehaps his most famous work, a map of Madrid and surrounding villages. The map, his most important work, earned the Honor Award of the International Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Science in Madrid in 1902.
