Description

Fine example of the Philippines, China, Korea, Japan and northwestern Pacific Sheet from the first edition of Espinosa y Tello's extremely rare 6 sheet chart of the Pacific, first published in 1812.

The present sheet extends from Kamtchatka to the Philippines and Gulf of Siam, with nice detail and a large inset for the Philippines, showing Plano Geometrico del Embocadero D. S Bernardino año 1792, with the tracks of Malaspina. The map tracks Malaspina, Maurelle and Ybargoitia's expeditions to the Philippines.

The chart bears the following imprint: Construida por Dn.Jose de Espinosa Londres 1812. No. 17 Dean Street, Soho.

The chart provides details on the discovery of many islands and points in the Western Pacific, tracking the major Spanish and other Voyages in the region, including:

  • Fernandez de Quiros (1606)
  • Malaspina and Bustamonte (1792)
  • Francesco Maurelle (1781)
  • Juan de Ybargoitia (1799)
  • Duff (1797) (Missionary Voyage)
  • Young William (1796)
  • Sugar Cane (1793) (East India Convict Ship)
  • Juan Monteverde (1803)
  • Joaquin ? (1802)
  • El Barwell (1798) (Convict Ship Barwell--East India Company)
  • Los Rusos (Russians-1805)
  • A.Y. Von Krusenstern (1804 and 1805)

The map includes a large inset of the Island of Luzon and the neighboring southern islands, with the route of Malaspina shown.

Espinosa y Tello's map was published in London in 1812 in 6 sheets, for an aggregate size of 126.7 x 247.8 cm (50.5 x 99 inches).

Carta general para las navegaciones a la India Oriental por el Mar del Sur y el Grande Oceano que separa el Asia de la America construida por Dn. Jose de Espinosa . . . Londres año 1812; E. Jones grabo.

A second state of the map was apparently issued in 1813.

Both states of the 6 sheet chart are extrmely rare, as are individual sheets. We cannot locate any example of the complete 6 sheet map being offered for sale in any dealer or auction catalogs.

We locate only the copies in the New York Public Library (acquired prior to 1887) and John Carter Brown Library in American institutions, copies in the National Library of Spain, National Library of Australia, and British Library.
