Description
Attractive example of Jacob Sandrart's map of Africa, one of only two maps engraved by Johann Baptist Homann prior to 1690. The map is a close model after De Wit. The detailed detailed scene in lower left, in particular, reveals much of the European thinking regarding Africa: Africans in traditional dress with a king under a parasol, lion, a fat-tailed sheep, and other animals. A nice example with a full color cartouche. Norwich 61; Tooley p51.
