Description

Large map of the City of Seoul, Korea, illustrating the city at a time believed to be between 1846 and 1849.

The map is illustrated as #166 in Old Maps of Korea and the information set forth below is derived from the description of the map in English translation of this book.

The map shows the various inner and outer walls of Seoul, with the city within the walls shown on a uniform scale but the area outside the walls on a different and smaller scale. The exact date of the map is not known but is believed to be between 1846 and 1849 (from the 12th through the 15th year of King Heonjong), because of the appearance of the name Chongwiyeong outside the Jahamun gate.

The map is a woodblock print presumed to have been made by Gsanja Kim Jeong-ho. The term Suseon orginated from "Stories of Confuscian Scholars of Sagi, which stated "building a supreme goodness begin in Seoul."

The map is noteworthy as both a large and detailed map of Seoul and for its artistic content.
