Description

Rare and finely executed view of Lisbon, published in 1756, one year after the Great Earthquake destroyed much of the city.

Schoenemann's view of Lisbon shows the city from the south, across the Rio Tejo, reflecting its importance as a prominent port and with a thriving ship building industry. The view includes a key locating 71 buildings and points of interest in French and German below it, with the title cartouche featuring an inset map of Portugal, flanked by two explorers, cherubim examining a compass and Poseidon with his trident.

OCLC locates only two copies: one at Harvard and the other in the Bibliotheque Nationale in France.
