Description

Fine large format poster map of the City of Oxford, published by British Railways.

The map provides a caricature of Oxford, with vignettes illustrating major landmarks, along with figures in period costumes, illustrating Oxford's storied history.

All the colleges are marked with small black and white vignette images of the buildings. At the right is a listing of four Women's Colleges which are noted as being outside the area of the map. The map covers the following area: St. John's and the Ashmolean at the left edge to the River Cherwell and Broad Walk at the right edge, from Balliol Cricket Ground and Manchester College to Magdalen at the upper edge and from Worcester to Campion Hall at the lower edge.

As noted on the Sanders of Oxford website description of the map:

J.P Sayer was an English artist and graphic designer. He provided the illustrations for the Motorist's Rhyme Book; a booklet produced by British Petroleum, which contorted popular nursery rhymes in order to sell its products. Sayer is best remembered for the posters that he designed for the Great Western Railway Company, and the uniquely pictographic style of his that emerged from these commissions. Works of Sayer's include posters of Oxford, Leamington Spa, Somerset. Cornwall and the Cambrian Coast.
