Description:

Detailed map of Southern Wisconsin, tracking the route of the La Crosse & Milwaukee Railroad from La Crosse, Wisconsin to its terminus in Milwaukee.

The La Crosse & Milwaukee Railroad was chartered in 1852 and failed shortly after the panic of 1857.  Before its failure, the line succeeded in becoming the second railroad to connect Milwaukee to the Mississippi River.  The map includes a marvelous treatment of Minnesota Territory only a few years after its creation.  Many Indian Tribes and early settlements west of the Mississippi are noted.

This rare map would appear to be the earliest printed map to focus on the railroad.

OCLC locates only 1 example, at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
