A decorative map of Great Britain and Ireland by Cluverius.

This attractive map embraces all of the British Isles; England is colored yellow, Ireland green and Scotland pink, although various offshore islands take on different hues. The fine title cartouche featuring 'Britannia' completes the elegant compostion.

Philipp Cluverius (Philipp Clüver) (1580-1622) was a cartographer and antiquary who serves as the Mintmaster of Danzig (now in Poland). The present map is from a later edition of Cluverius's Introductio in universam geographiam, a 6-part atlas first published posthumously in 1624, it is considered to be the first comprehensive modern geography. The map of Britain would have had special signifigance to Cluverius, as he famously toured England and Scotland by foot.
