Description

Rare first edition of Longchamps map of Colonies in the New World east of the Misissippi River, with a large inset of the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and the Gulf Coast, which includes signficant revisions from the first edition of the map.

The map includes the cartographic information from John Mitchell's map of North America and may have been intended as a direct response to the Jean Palairet's map advocating the English case for control of the lands in the Ohio River Valley which would become the flashpoint for the French & Indian War.

The map was originally issued by Longchamps at the outset of the French & Indian War, with a second edition issued in 1776 with a slightly modified title: Carte Des Possessions des Colonies Anglaises dans le Continent de L'Amerique Septentrionale et Partie de la Louisiane . A Paris Ches le Sieur Longchamps, Geographe, rue Saint Jacques, a L'Enseigne de la Place de Victoires. C.P.R. a Paris, 1776.

The first edition of the map predates the addition of F. Checagan below Lake Michigan and the additions of S. Phillipe, F. de Chartres Prairie du Rocher, and St. Geneveve on the Upper Mississippi River.

The supplemental map also includes a fine large format early presentation of the region on the eve of the French & Indian War.
