Description

Fascinating map of the World, depicting Jakob Roggeveen's travels to the South Pacific, published in his Tweejaarige Reyze rondom de Wereld . . . , of 1724.

In 1721, Jakob Roggeveen set out to locate Terra Australis, the southern continent described by Abel Tasman and Juan Fernandez in prior centuries. Sailing on behalf of the Dutch West India Company, Roggeveen's 3 ships saile to the Falklands, Chile and Juan Fernandez Island, before crossing the Pacific toward Australia. Along the way, Roggeveen discovered Easter Island (Rapa Nui), the Society Islands and Samoa.
