Description

Rare map showing the area around Phoenix, Arizona, published by the Arizona Improvement Company, builders of the Arizona Canal between 1883 and 1885.

One of the most prominent features of the map is the location and identificaton of each of the 19 gates along the canal.

The map shows the various gold, silver and copper miing regions around Phoenix, along with early towns, Gold Reduction Works, the Grand Canal, the Falls of the Arizona Canal, US Agricultural Station, Capitol Grounds, Maricopa Canal, etc.

Several early railroad lines are shown, including the Santa Fe, Prescott & Phoenix Railroad and the Maricopa & Phoenix South., along with the proposed route ofthe San Diego, Phoenix & Eastern Railroad. The townsite for Mesa, Arizona is also drawn in by hand.

The present map is similar to a map held in the Sharlot Hall Map Museum Collection, but this map appears to be several years earlier, based upon additions added to the Sharlot Hall map. We can find no other examples of this map in any public or private collections: azmemory.azlibrary.gov/cdm/singleitem/collection/shmmaps/id/148
