Description

Unrecorded separately issued Revolutionary War battle plan of of the area around Boston, drawn shortly after the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775.

The map shows Boston at the center, with 3 ships denoting the Britsh Naval presense. The roads to Bsoton are are shown, extending to Lyn(n), Woborn, Lexington, Concord, Sudbury, Natick, Scherburn and Hingham. The English and American fortifications and positions are shown.

The map is quite focused. We have compared it to several famous early English plans, but have not been able to identify a direct source for the information. We note that in 1989, Graham Arader offered for sale German edition of the Beaurain map, which he identified as the "only German map of Boston during the Revolutionary period ." ( Carte von dem Hafen und der Stad Boston mit den Umliegenden Gegenden und der den Lagern sowohl der Americaner als auch der Englander von dem Cheval de Beaurin nach dem Pariser Orignal von 1776). In theory, the map could be loosely based upon Sayer & Bennett's map of the "Seat of War," but the Sayer & Bennett map covers a much broader area.

The legend below the map translates as follows: ""Should the war widen to the North or South, this map will be complemented by others." It is therefore clear that the map was prepared very shortly after word of the Battle of Bunker Hill reached Germany, but before news of addtional battles arrived. It also strongly supports the conclusion that the map was separately issued.

The map is apparently very rare (if not unrecorded). It is not listed in not in Krieger-Cobb "Mapping Boston" or Boston Engineering Dept., "List of Maps of Boston." We found no prior auction records or dealer records for the map.
