Description

Rare 3rd state of this unusual map of the World issued by von Watte (also known as Vadianus) in Zurich in 1572. The each of the earlier editions (1534 and 1542) contain different attributions at the bottom. The cartography is largely that of the Sebastian Munster-Hans Holbein world map of 1532 (Shirley 67). The map shows a passage between the Americas and Terra de Cuba in North America. The rest of the World is an odd mix of Ptolemaic and modern geography and place names. One of the earliest obtainable world maps to show the New World. All states are rare. A printer's crease and repaired tear/flaw near the centerfold, else a nice example. Shirley 70 (3rd State).
