Description

An early map of Australia showing a completed coastline, Bass Strait and the discoveries of both Baudin and Flinders.

The coloring on the coasts is coded to denote the discoveries made by the English, French and Dutch. The map identifies most of Southeastern Australia as Napoleon's Land.

While we have seen various dates for the map, we have gone with the National Library of Austalia's dating of 1815-1816 and the place of publication as Prague. Perry & Prescott identify the source of the map as Lindner's Neueste Lander=und Volkerkund . . . Sechzehnter Band. Austalien, first published in Prague in 1815. The map was first published in 1814 in Weimar, in Lindner's Der funfte Welttheil oder Australien.

Friedrich Ludwig Lindner (1772-1845) was apparently a writer and journalist, who began his career in 1803 in Vienna and worked as a professor of philosophy in Jena from 1813 to 1814, and later served as editor of the Europaische Annalen.
