Description

Interesting local promotional map of South Dakota, printed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota by Will A. Beach.

The map was published to promote Lyman County, South Dakota, which is colored in yellow and situated just north of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the the Rosebud Indian Reservation. The county is servied by an extension of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway from Oacoma to the Black Hills. The map includes an extensive table of economic facts supporting the financial (primarily farming) opportunities in the state of South Dakota.

Perhaps most interesting is the advertising for Bartine & McLain, offering Lands, Loans and Abstracts, with officies in Oacoma (current population 390), Presho (580) and Murdo (612) in Lyman County. A fine example of the imagination and industry employed by promoters of these newly opened lands, who needed to create an image of prosperity and services to promote the region to settlers from the midwest and eastern US.
