Decorative double hemisphere map of the World, which appeared in Dalham's Institutiones physicae... Quibus ceu subsidium praemittuntur institutiones mathematicae.
The map includes a remarkable depiction of Mt. Vesuvius erupting, with smaller. vignettes of Niagara Falls, an Eskimo and a native Greenlander.
Mt. Vesuvius had its first "modern" eruption in 1631 and there were significant eruptions in 1660, 1682, 1694, 1698, 1707, 1737. The combination of images suggests a 17th Century publication, but we were not able to find any reference to the map and it is unquestionably very rare.
In our discussions with Ronald Shirley, he suggest a date of 1630s-1650s, with the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius likely spurring the publication. The view of Niagara falls suggests a date that would be post-1677 (Hennepin's visit to Niagara Falls and subsequent illustration), so we have opted for circa 1690.
