Description

Nice example the Homann Heirs edition of Lopez's map of the Iberian Peninsula.

Johann Baptiste Homann, patriarch of this important 18th Century family of map makers whose work dominated German cartographic publishing for over 100 years, produced at least 3 different maps of Iberia which bear his name. The control of the firm was pased to Johann Christoph Homann following the death of his father, and later to other family members and business partners, over the course of over 100 years in the business.

The map provides a detailed coverage of the geographical and topographical features of Spain & Portugal, including cities, towns, castles, mountains, rivers and most notably, a number of early roads. The later editions of the Homann maps are often more scarce and interesting than the earlier editions.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
