Rare separately issued example of the second edition of Reading Howell's seminal map of Pennsylvania.

Lttle is known about Howell's life and career. He was a surveyor and landowner, who was appointed one of three commissioners to explore the headwaters of the Susquehanna, Lehigh & Schuykill Rivers. Howell produced this and a 4 sheet map in 1791, the first full maps of the state. The large map was published in London, making this map was the first map showing the entire state published in US.

Howell's map was first issued in 1792. This edition adds the names of counties, county boundaries, surveyors districts and a number of rivers, place names, streams and roads. Several new canals are also noted.
