Nice example of Brue's wall map of the the Gulf Coast, Caribbean and Central America, from a rare atlas edition of Brue's wall maps.
Texas is a republic, with many early towns and roads illustrated. Excellent detail in Florida and the Caribbean, including a number of areas with special annotations. The detail in Central America and the Yucatan is also noteworthy. Insegts of the Virigin Islands, Martinique and Guadalupe. Nine place names shown on Grand Cayman Island. Many interesting and detailed notes. One of the best large format maps of the region to appear in a commercial atlas.
Andre Hubert Brué was a French geographer and cartographer. Born in Paris, he served in the French Navy, joining the Baudin expedition to the Pacific (1800-1804). After his sea service, Brué applied his navigation and charting skills to creating finely-crafted maps, which were renowned for their crisp engraving and accuracy. He drew directly on the copper of the plate, creating what he called encyprotypes. He is best known for the Atlas universal de géographie physique, politique, ancienne et moderne.
