Description

Rare large format map of Omaha and Council Bluffs, published for the East Omaha Land Company The map was almost certainly published as a promotional devise to promote the lands recently acquired by the CB&Q Railroad's East Omaha Land Company (Richard Cushing President), which would become East Omaha. A total of $300,000 was spent to clear low-lying land of willows and to grade streets before lots were offered for sale. Within East Omaha (noted in yellow), the map shows and 8 square block subdivision within East Omaha, with the rest of the blocks undivided. The remainder of the map shows all of the developed and undeveloped subdivsions of Omaha, extending west to 39th Street, south to Pacific Street and north to the U.S. Barracks and Browne Street. Many subdivisions, streets, and buildings are named, as are dozens of places, street car and rail lines. Excellent detail in Council Bluffs as well. Our research identified only the Omaha Historical Society's copy of the map. Not in the Library of Congress. The present example has been flattened and archivally backed. Very minor loss at fold intersections, but in all, a very nice example.
