Description

Exceedingly rare separately issued pocket map of the Richmond Coal Fields, with extensive commercial information in the tables below and various ornate embellishments. Shows the Southside Railroad, Richmond & Petersburg Railroad, City Point Railroad, Virginia Central Railroad, Richmond, Fredricksburg & Potomac Railroad, Richmond & Danville Railroad, Clover Hill Railroad, Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad etc. Centered on the City of Richmond and the Coal fields. The map was originally issued as part of a very rare mining pamphet. However, this example is in a period 12 mo black leather covers, with gilt title, suggesting that it is either a unique or extremely rare separately issued example, perhaps prepared as a keepsake or similar presentation piece in connection with the promotion of the region. No record of any example of the map in any auction or dealer catalogues and no record of any separately issued examples in any public instutitions. Ritchie & Dunnavant were among the leading printers of the time in Virginia and produced a number of other rare and important imprints during the period.
