This commemorative print titled The War Congress of the United States of America from 1898 is a significant historical document, capturing the Fifty-Fifth Congress at a defining moment in American history, marked by the phrase "They 'Remembered the Maine,'" in reference to the USS Maine, whose sinking precipitated the Spanish-American War.
This meticulously compiled lithograph presents a panoramic view of the Congress in session, surrounded by the portraits of key political and military figures of the time, including President William McKinley and military leaders whose roles would have been magnified by the onset of war. The gravity of the moment is encapsulated in the solemnity of the portraits and the detailed depiction of the House Chamber, filled with the representatives of the states.
Contemporary headshots were used to depict every representative, with each assigned a number corresponding to a key below the image, as well as various journalists in the Press Gallery. On the edges, there are oval portraits of key politicians and military figures pertaining to the war, including President McKinley; Vice President Hobart; Secretary of War Alger; Secretary of Navy Long; Rear Admiral Sampson; Read Admiral Dewey; Commodore Schley; Captain Sigsbee; Major General Miles; Major General Merritt; Major General Lee and Major General Wheeler.
E. M. Pottle issued a print of the members of the House of Representatives in 1897 prior to the start of the war. This image was reissued by Isaac Israel after the conclusion of the war to celebrate the House of Representatives role in the conflict. Pottle’s initial print did not include a key identifying all the House members. A companion print of the “United States War Senate” was issued as well.
Each member of the House of Representatives is meticulously enumerated below the central image, with their names, districts, and states organized in a precise typographic array. This detailed roster provides not only a snapshot of the legislative body at this crucial juncture but also serves as a genealogical and political resource, delineating the individuals who guided the nation through the conflict.
