Description

A nice example of the great early American-made maps of Vermont, engraved by Joseph Callendar in Boston for James Whitelaw in 1793. The map was evidently published by Isaiah Carlisle Thomas.

Callendar (not to be confused with his nephew, Benjamin Callendar) was an important figure in the immediate-post-Revolution Boston print market. He worked for Revere and others before the War and had a lengthy career, dying in 1821 at the age of 70.

Rarity

Rare. No examples are listed on OldMaps.com. There is a single record on RBH in recent decades and none before that.

Condition Description
Engraving on 18th-century laid paper. Minor tears and splits supported on verso with period paper. Some soiling.
