Rare American Map By Daniel Friedrich Sotzmann
Finely engraved map of the West Coast of North America, stretching from Kodiak Island in the north to San Diego, drawn by famed German mapmaker D.F. Sotzmann.
Sotzmann's map depicts the West Coast of North America based upon the recent discoveries of the English, French, Spanish and Russian explorations in the region up to 1800, and including the discoveries of George Vancouver.
Vancouver is alternatively named for both Vancouver and Quadra. Large inset of Korea, China, Japan, and the Russian Coastline to the North.
The map appeared in Magazin von merkwurdigen neuen Reisebeschreibungen : aus fremden Sprachen ubersetzt und mit erlauternden Anmerkungen begleitet, accompanied by a short article announcing the discoveries of Vancouver along the Northwest coast of America.
Sotzmann achieved his greatest fame as the mapmaker of a remarkable set of maps of the individual United States as part of a wider project with noted German scholar Chrisopher Ebeling, who complied the first large scale map of the indivicual United States published outside America in the second half of the 1790s.
