Description

Marvelous separately issued promotional map of California, issued by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company.

Includes a temperature key and a list of the tallest mountains in California. While the map is titled "Climatic Map. . . ," the railway detail in the map is truly superb, with every minor train stop throughout the state identified, including a number of "towns" which no longer exist.

Relief is shown by hachures. Shows the different temperature zones of the state by use of color. Also used as a promotional broadside for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Editions

The map was first issued in 1887. It was continuously updated, generally to add new lines and stations.

This edition of 1889 includes an attractive map of the whole United States on the verso, as well as other illustrative flourishes.

At the top of the sheet is an inset map showing railroad routes from New Orleans through the West Coast. This was done away with in later editions.

Condition Description
