Description

Rare 17th Century birdseye view of Messina, published in Paris.

The text below the map translates as follows:

"Messina, the capital of Sicily, is the most beautiful and oldest city of the island. Most of its Churches are still the same temples once dedicated to false gods. Furthermore, this city is extremely well fortified, but its most significant buildings are in ruins; its strength lies in the forts that surround it and defend its entrance, ensuring safety. Additionally, due to the forts, one can come and stay in safety. The fort of St. Sauveur is the most significant as it is the seat of the Archbishopric. Silk is its main trade, but what makes it especially commendable is the wise choice that led to its being placed under the fortunate rule of Louis the Great in 1674."
