Description

Rare Decorative Plan and View of Edinburgh Dedicated to George Lockhart esq.

Rare early edition of this large decorative bird's-eye view and prospect of Edinburgh, engraved by the Scots mapmaker Andrew Johnston, and first published in 1714.

The map also appeared in the Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne, published by Joseph Smith from 1719 onwards. The plan is based upon a rare two-sheet plan of Edinburgh drawn by James Gordon in 1647, and published by Johannes Blaeu in 1647, and later re-printed by Fredrick de Wit.

There are six states of the map:

  • State 1 (1714): No imprint at bottom
  • State 2 (1718): joint imprint of Andrew Johnston, William Taylor and Robert Hulton.
  • State 3 (1719):  imprint of Joseph Smith
  • State 4: (1737 circa):  Printed for and sold by Tho. Millward & Bis. Dickinson at Inigo Iones Head, next Globe Tavern in Fleet Street.  without the list of closes at the extreme right.
  • State 5 (1737 circa):  extra sheet added, with a list of closes at the extreme right - presumably printed from a separate plate.
  • State 6: (1750 and after):  John Bowles imprint

Rarity

All states are relatively scarce.
