Rare first state of Baist's important early atlas of Seattle, published by G. William Baist.

Nice example of Baist's rare atlas of Seattle, the earliest comprehensive atlas of the city by a publisher other than Sanborn.  This first edition consists of an Index map and 22 double page and 1 single page local maps (with #15 missing from this example).  A second edition, expanded to 33 maps, would be issued in 1908.

Meticulously detailed, yet offered in a scale that gives a wider overview than Sanborn, Baist's work was quite exceptional for the period.

G. William Baist Company of Philadelphia produced these detailed city atlases beginning at the end of the 19th Century.   Baist’s maps were for real estate title searches and included detailed building, subdivision, infrastructure, and street data. They were beautifully designed and colored, and produced for dozens of U.S. cities, but in small quantities.  Unlike the Sanborn Company, the atlases were not widely circulated and are now quite rare on the market.

Condition Description
Large folio. Original half roan and cloth, cover stamped in blind and gilt. Corners worn. Leather on spine partially chippped away, especially along outer joints, but covers holding by strong underlying canvas hinge construction. Title-page dust soiled. Map sheets backed on linen. Lacking Plate #15.
