Description

Nice example of this early promotional ski poster for Taos, New Mexico.

The Village of Taos Ski Valley has a rich history that began with mining in the late 1600s. Initially mined by the Spanish, the area saw a resurgence in mining activities in the early 1900s due to new techniques, focusing on timber, gold, and copper. Prominent companies like the American Consolidated Mines Company, Fraser Mountain Company, and San Cristobal Company operated here. However, by 1906, mining activities declined due to weather constraints.

Post World War II, Orville E. Pattison purchased land in the area, a property that remains largely under the Pattison family's ownership today. The mid-1950s marked a significant shift with the arrival of Ernie Blake, who pioneered the development of the ski industry in the valley. Recognizing the growing demand for homes and lodging due to the burgeoning ski business, the Pattisons began subdividing their land for residential and commercial purposes.

The 1960s saw further development in the lower village, with the Pattisons selling and leasing lots for homes and businesses. In the early 1970s, they acquired water rights to support the growing needs of the Ski Valley and collaborated with the Ski Valley Corporation to develop Kachina Village. Their involvement in the area's development continues to this day.

Ernie Blake was instrumental in establishing the Taos Ski Valley Resort. The first ski lift was installed in 1956, and by 1957, the first ski run, now known as Snakedance, was opened. The introduction of a Poma lift on Al’s Run soon followed. Today, Taos Ski Valley is recognized as one of America's premier ski resorts, notable for remaining family-owned and operated.
