Aspen Highlands is a ski area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, near the town of Aspen. It was founded and the land developed by Aspenite Whip Jones in 1958. Jones donated the land to Harvard University in 1965, setting a precedent for philanthropy in the skiing industry. The resort is known for its expert terrain, including the famous "Highland Bowl," and it has long been the ski hill of choice for residents of the Aspen area.
Unlike the other nearby skiing areas, Aspen Highlands was not part of the original Aspen Skiing Company. It was independently owned and operated until 1993 when it was acquired by the Aspen Skiing Company, making it part of the larger network of ski areas around Aspen.
Aspen Highlands stands out from its neighboring resorts for its community vibe and challenging terrain. It has traditionally attracted a more dedicated skiing clientele, with fewer amenities and a more rugged atmosphere than the more glamorous Aspen Mountain or the family-friendly Buttermilk.
