Description

Detailed mineralogical map of Peru, illustrating the intricate mineral wealth of Peru.

The map was published in Paz Soldan and Mariano Felipe’s Atlas geografico del Peru, the first modern atlas dedicated to this South American nation. This map, with its detailed delineation of mineral deposits, serves not only as a geographical representation but also as a testament to the era's burgeoning scientific and economic interests in the region.

The map’s primary feature is its meticulous color-coding system, with 18 distinct shades used to illustrate the diverse range of minerals found across Peru, including silver, copper, coal, and gold. The map predates the discovery of the Yanacocha mine, highlighting the evolving nature of geological knowledge at the time. Historical mining sites like Cerro de Pasco and Castrovirreyna, known for their centuries of operation, are also prominently marked, bridging past practices with contemporary exploration.
