This large map of the San Francisco Peninsula is one of the first Coast Survey charts to utilize contour lines, along with the USCS map of the City of San Francisco. The map extends from the City and Golden Gate to the San Andreas Valley, showcasing topographical details, roads, towns, mountains, rivers, and other features. It is an excellent example of this scarce and historically significant map.

A note on the map indicates that it was reduced from surveys conducted under the direction of A.D. Bache, Superintendent of U.S. Coast Survey, by R.D. Cutts, A.M. Harrison, and A.F. Rodgers, assistants between 1850 and 1857. The map incorporates topography adjacent to the ocean and bay, as well as supplementary surveys of the interior conducted under the direction of General A.A. Humphreys, Chief of Engineers U.S.A., in 1867 and 1868, by A.F. Rodgers and C. Rockwell, assistants in the Coast Survey.
