Taber was a pioneering California photographer who started out as a daguerreotypist. His output of California images was prolific. In 1871, Taber opened his own studio, where he gained fame for reproducing the photos of Carleton Watkins. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed Taber's San Francisco studio, gallery, and negative collection.
