Lorin Hartwell Jr Thompson was a muralist, artist, and creator and illustrator of the character Ranger Rick for the National Wildlife Federation's children's magazine, Ranger Rick.

After being awarded the commission to create the New Deal-era mural Legend of the Singing River in Pascagoula, Thompson, would gain most of his artistic recognition later in life. His name became recognized for the character “Ranger Rick” that he created for the National Wildlife Federation’s youth publication titled Ranger Rick.

His drawings, lithographs, etchings and paintings have been exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute, Corcoran Gallery of Fine Arts (Washington, DC), the National Gallery (Washington, DC), the Whitney Museum (New York City), and the Carnegie Museum (Pittsburgh, PA)

Thompson also did a number of children's book illustrations.
