Description

Scarce example of the first edition, third state of Mathew Carey's map of New York, published in Carey's General Atlas circa 1805.

Carey's American Atlas was the first atlas published in the United States, compiling a number of excellent maps from indigenous sources in the first compilation of American maps. This map was engraved by William Harrison Jr. It shows New York with its Western boundary after the 1786 adjustment with Pennsylvania. The map shows a remarkable amount of detail, including Indian reservations, landowners names, towns, counties, rivers, mountains, roads and a host of other details.

This state of the map adds a number of counties and other details not in the 1800 edition and removes most of the information in Pennsylvania.
