Description

Fascinating regional map showing part of Andalusia and Granada and the northern tip of Morocco. The map extends north to the Guadalquivir River and the Bay of Cadis and east to include Malaga. Centered on Gibralter and Algezira. On the Moroccan Coastline, the cities of Tangiers, Ceuta, and Tetuan appear and the map extends east to Cassasa. Wonderful detail of the interior mountains and rivers, with roads shown between cities. Three large sailing ships, compass rose and cartouche. A nice example of this scarce map, which last appeared in a dealer catalogue in 1986.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
