Description

First edition of this rare wall map of New York City, coloured by wards, showing streets, wharfs, parks, ferry lines and a host of other details. Thayer, Bridgeman, Fanning and Ensign (not named here), were among the leading map publishers in New York City in the mid-19th Century, and produced a number of interesting pocket and wall maps. While Haskell notes that a copy of the first edition resides in the New York Historical Society collection, the map is not listed in Phillips and we were unable to find catalogue or auction records dating back 25 years. While the map is presentable, it is not without its flaws, lacking the lower ferule and with minor breaks and losses in several places, but with all of the original silk edges. Haskell, Manhattan Maps, 980-83.
