Stock# Anburey
Description

Rare German translation of Thomas Anburey's account of his travels in the interior of North America, extra illustrated with two rare maps of interest for its content in the Northwestern parts of America and the Arctic.

This is apparently a very rare variant edition of a book normally titled Reisen in Inneren von Amerika, first published in Berlin in 1792. This variant title is listed by Sabin as including "plates and a map." We note an appearance in Eberstadt (1937) and Reiss (2008), neither example mentioning a map.

One of the two maps is by Sotzmann. Our research indicates that the map is separately issued. The second map typically is found in the German of Georg Forester's account, engraved in Berlin in 1791 by Carl Jack.

The Sotzmann map is typically credited as being the map which led to Ebeling's discovery of Sotzmann as a mapmaker, which led to Sotzmann's engraving the maps for Ebeling's American Atlas.
